Powerful Pavements for High-Tech Townhomes

A lot of thought went into designing and building Hyacinth Place, 11 affordable, eco-friendly, transit-oriented townhomes in Highland Park, Ill. A small project with a large scope, these homes earned a LEED Gold rating through energy efficient design and fixtures, geothermal heating and cooling, and eco-friendly interior finishes for cabinets and flooring. Outside, two cement-based materials for exterior finishes contributed to the LEED rating through the use of traditional and cutting edge technology. More.

Concrete Rises to Head of the Class

St. Anne’s Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va. is benefitting from some alums that own and operate Allied Concrete in Charlottesville. They are giving back to their alma mater through their knowledge of building systems for safe, comfortable, energy efficient, and overall “green” construction. From insulating concrete forms (ICFs) to the pervious parking lot, concrete is integral to the project. More.

  ... BUILDING CODES

High Performance Building Requirements for Sustainability

At present, there is no approved national model building code dealing with high performance or sustainability, so some state and local jurisdictions are adopting their own codes addressing these issues. In an effort to further the development and advancement of more comprehensive green or sustainable building code requirements, PCA has developed a compilation of code changes called High Performance Building Requirements for Sustainability. These recommendations are offered as modifications to the International Code Council International Building Code (IBC) and can be considered for adoption, implementation, and enforcement by state and local jurisdictions.   ... ASK THE EXPERT

Ask the Expert: Donn Thompson, Portland Cement Association

Can pervious concrete pavement replace traditional storm water collection systems?

In larger scale applications, the rainwater diversion, collection, and temporary storage capabilities of pervious concrete pavements can often supplement, or even eliminate, traditional means of stormwater management. Many subdivisions have been successfully designed with pervious concrete streets in place of long lengths of drainage piping and land grabbing detention ponds, reducing environmental impacts. More.
