RCC Pavements Webinar 3/15/11

RCC Pavements Webinar
Date: Tuesday, March 15, 2011
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM CDT

Mix Design and Specifications for Roller-Compacted Concrete Pavements

This webinar is one of three online training programs PCA offers on roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavements. This webinar focuses on specifications and mixture design of RCC for pavement applications. The other 2 webinars provide an overview of RCC materials, construction means and methods, applications, and pavement thickness design.

In this webinar, typical specification requirements for materials, mixing plants, tolerances, placing methods, and quality control testing will be covered. In addition, this webinar will introduce several mix design methods and will cover in more detail the soil compaction mix design approach, which is the approach most commonly used for RCC pavement mixtures in the U.S. To demonstrate this approach, a step by step mix design example will be presented.

RCC takes its name from the construction method used to build it. It's placed with conventional or high-density asphalt paving equipment, and then compacted with rollers. RCC pavements were originally used in the 1970s when the Canadian logging industry switched to environmentally cleaner, land-based log-sorting methods. The industry needed a strong pavement to stand up to massive loads and specialized equipment. Yet economy was equally important. Today, RCC is used when strength, durability, and economy are primary needs. It is commonly used at port, intermodal, and military facilities; parking, storage, and staging areas; streets, intersections; highway shoulders; and low-speed roads.
