Eric Giannini, Ph.D., P.E.

Director, Product Standards and Technology

As a student at The University of Texas at Austin, Eric Giannini and one of his advisors, Dr. Kevin Folliard, submitted a proposal for the 2010 Fellowship Awards. Their proposal, ASR Autoclaved Concrete Prisms Test, was selected as one of the four funded that year. In 2012, Eric received his Ph.D. for his thesis, Evaluation of Concrete Structures Affected by Alkali-Silica Reaction and Delayed Ettringite Formation. Eric went on to successful teaching and consulting positions before joining PCA in 2022.

As PCA’s current director of product standards and technology, Eric engages with PCA members and various technical committees to support PCA’s mission.

Some of Eric’s work with PCA involves:

Ongoing harmonization of portland cement standards (ASTM C150, AASHTO M 85) and blended cement standards (ASTM C595, AASHTO M 240). This has been especially important as cement producers expand their production of blended cements, identified in PCA’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality as a near-term response to growing environmental concerns to reduce environmental impacts from cement manufacture.

Serving on ACI Committee 323, Low-Carbon Concrete Code, to fast-track development of a code for low-carbon concrete. As property owners, government, and designers and specifiers demand lower carbon building materials, the new “323 Code” provides clear guidance and an effective approach to ensure the environmental considerations are compatible with the structural performance needs.
